Installation for Nancy

Installation View

My installation is unique in that the intended audience is a cat, Nancy. It could be categorized as an example of Activated Spectatorship, though certainly without the typical political themes. Spectators (Nancy) are intended to play with some of the works, or at least approach them with curiosity and interact with them in some way. Twine ties all the objects together (no pun intended). The installation is comprised of everyday objects altered in some way with the addition of twine, which (for the most part) changes their function. If there is any commentary to the installation, it is a critique of consumerism. All of these objects with all of these functions mean nothing to Nancy. The original function of the objects is completely irrelevant to her, she is a cat.

The Catfé

Unnecessarily Tumultuous Tennis Racket

Originally, my plan was to make nearly all of the installation in this same manner - wrapping things completely in twine. However, this was nearly 2/3 of my twine, so I had to change things up last minute.

Milk and Keurig

The Column

Hannah Montana(ncy) Guitar

Both the cords and the broken string are there for Nancy to bat at. If I'd had a lot more string, I would have wrapped some around the post like a scratching post.

Shoestrings

This one is rather unspectacular. It's cute. The shoelaces were supposed to be more dangly things for Nancy to bat at and play with (that she could reach a little better), but sadly they are not long enough to dangle. The laces are made of short pieces of string that are tucked in, so she could hypothetically pluck one out and chew on it if she wanted to.

Nancy's Throne

This is one part of the installation that is arguably for the people living in Co-op, not for Nancy. It designates a place of reverence for Nancy. All of the other low angle shots are Nancy's viewpoint, but this one is from a human point of view as we bow before our queen.

Comments

  1. I love your idea of showing her name first. It let me think is it a person's name first. And then, the cat Nancy stood there. That's so attractive for me!

  2. I adore this installation for Nancy! I definitely think that you should sew the letters on the chair, so co-op can keep it as a permanent part of their "collection". It's very funny that in such a small class three of us focused on domestic animals for our projects.
